My friends I appreciate the outrage being shown towards the Obama Administration and the Congress in general, but what real change is there? When the elections of 2010 come, will the motivated electorate actually challenge the status quo politicians in their state or district? Unfortunately, no.
History has shown in the past that we are more than happy with our scoundrel, while screaming about the other's sell-out politician. The Tea-Party Movement and the 9/12 groups are great. However, other than bringing an awareness of the troubles of big government and the incivility of political discourse, what is the endgame? Will there be a great influx of new challengers to the Democratic and Republican establishment?
I am a great believer in the political system and third parties. However to make the changes needed in the country we have to work within the two established parties. Are small government, pro-second amendment Republicans willing to vote against a big government Republican candidate? Are Democrats prepared to vote for a Patriot Act, pro-war Democratic candidate? Is either prepared to vote for a third party candidate?
Until we are willing to either run for office or vote across party lines for the candidate who is putting country before party we are the ones driving the country off the cliff. As times get more difficult both parties try to panic us into believing they are the answer to the current crisis. Yet when they get in office we find, just like the old Who song, "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."
Let's hope that some new applicants apply for the job in 2010.
